Delaware Defeats Howard, 5-2

ELKTON, Md. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team opened the 2015 spring schedule Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Howard University at Elkton Indoor Tennis.
Freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow School No. 1953) led off the day with a convincing 8-0 win in No. 1 doubles for the Blue Hens (1-0).
Delaware clinched the doubles point after freshman Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill.) and senior Kim Milla (México City, México/CONAMAT) fought for an 8-6 victory against Stacey Roheman and Umarah Mughnee in the second flight.
In singles action, Shuren defeated Roheman, 6-4, 6-4 in the top flight while junior Danea Jonjic' (Split, Croatia/Croatia Natural Sciences & Technical) earned a 6-4, 6-1 win against Mughnee.
The Hens sealed the team victory behind Milla's come-from-behind 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 win over Maame Osei in No. 5 singles.
Senior Abby Martinez (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) also posted a close 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory versus Sajela Harlow in the sixth flight.
“It is great to start out the season with an exceptionally close match. The doubles point was key in addition to Kim Milla clinching the match after coming from set down. I'm proud of the way the ladies handled themselves and the way they competed with the matches so close.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Including fall tournament play, the Blue Hens are 40-25 (singles) and 27-10 (doubles) overall.
· Arielle Shuren improved to 7-4 in top-flight singles during her rookie season.
