BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It came down to the final match, but the University of Delaware women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory Wednesday evening over Lehigh University at the Lewis Tennis Center.
The Blue Hens (2-0) started on the right foot as freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow School No. 1953) tallied the first win of the day with a 6-1 first flight victory over Cassidy Cruz and Briana Maravich.
The Mountain Hawks evened the match just minutes later before Delaware freshman Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill.) and senior Kim Milla (México City, México/CONAMAT) paired to clinch the doubles point off a 6-3 win against Abby Farrell and Jessica Graham in the No. 2 spot.
Shuren continued to shine in her rookie campaign with a 7-5, 7-5 top flight win versus Cruz while Naumova hung tough and closed out Farrell, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in No. 3 singles.
Tied at 3-3, Milla captured the team victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Abby Duddy in the fifth slot.
“This was such a battle because Lehigh has a very athletic and hungry squad. Each and every match was extremely close. Kim [Milla] probably had the most outstanding performance of the day while Arielle [Shuren] and Nataliya [Naumova] fought through their matches. I'm very proud of how everyone performed this evening.”
