PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A slow first half start hindered the University of Delaware women's basketball team as the Blue Hens dropped a 61-56 decision to Drexel University at the Daskalakis Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.
The Dragons held a 32-21 lead at halftime and led by as much as 18 points with just over nine minutes
remaining in the game before Delaware came roaring back. The Hens outscored Drexel, 35-29, in the second half and came within three points with under a minute left on the clock.
UD (8-11, 3-5 Colonial Athletic Association) then collected two fouls and a turnover in the final 40 seconds as the Dragons (12-7, 6-2 CAA) closed out the game with the victory.
Sophomore Erika Brown (at left; Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) led all scorers with 22 points in addition to collecting three rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes of play.
Junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added 16 points and a game-high five assists. Freshman Makeda Nicholas (below right; North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) finished the game with six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Rachel Pearson posted 17 points for Drexel while Sarah Curran collected 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
“We were not ready to play in the first half. We were out of it mentally and that's how Drexel built a big lead. There was a lack of focus and then the frustration sets in. It was an uphill battle because we weren't ready to go. We dug ourselves such a hole that it was hard to come back from. Silly fouls and lack of focus came back to kick us in the worst time.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“In the first half, we didn't come ready to play. This has nothing to do with us being a young team. At the end of the day, this is a basketball game. You have to be re
ady every game whether you're playing the best team in the league or the worst team. When we're ready and focused, we're a tough team to beat.”
