NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware will induct its 19th Athletics Hall of Fame Class in a ceremony tonight, Oct. 2, at the Embassy Suites and follow with a special on-field halftime recognition on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Blue Hens host William & Mary in football at Delaware Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Today we finish the 10-day countdown with our final inductee.
EVENT DAY Oct. 2)
A native of Joppa, Md., Steve was a four-year standout who led his teams to a combined record of
39-26, including a 19-1 mark in East Coast Conference play and three league titles. The 1984 team went 12-4 and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
A 1986 team captain, he earned USILA All-American honors three straight years in 1984-86 and is one of only five players in school history to accomplish that feat. He also was a three-time first team All-ECC selection and played in the annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game in 1986.
He set eight school records and owned six NCAA marks upon graduation, including national standards for career groundballs (541), career groundballs per game (9.49), faceoff winning percentage in a season (.774 in 1985) and a career (.707), and faceoffs won in a season (237 in 1986) and career (838). He played in 58 career games and tallied 75 points on 41 goals and 34 assists and still owns four of the top seven single season faceoff winning pct. marks in school history.
Steve earned his degree in finance from Delaware in 1987 and also is a graduate of the Running a Private Real Estate Company Program and the AMDP Executive Program from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He began a career in commercial real estate in 1987 and worked with McGill Development Co. and Merritt Properties before starting his own commercial real estate development firm, Shaw Real Estate, earlier this summer.
He resides in Baltimore, Md. with his wife, Susan, and they have three children. His oldest child, Ryan, will attend Delaware next fall (2016) and compete for the men's lacrosse team. Steve continues to coach the sport and has coached all of his children.
“Some 30 years after graduating from the University of Delaware it is not the individual achievements nor the experiences on the field that I vividly remember," said Shaw. "It is the team achievements, the moments with my coaches, teammates and friends that even 30 years later make me bend over with laughter. The memories of the individuals who went out of their way to help me be a better player on the field and more importantly a better person off the field. The culture of the University of Delaware promotes devoted life-long friendships and that is what I am so thankful for today.”
