TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped the opening two sets but rallied back to win the final three and post a thrilling 3-2 victory over Towson Wednesday night at SECU Arena.
The Blue Hens, who won their second straight while improving to 11-11 overall and 3-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association, captured the match by set scores of 27-29, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13. Towson fell to 19-4 overall and 6-3 in league play, as the Tigers lost just their second home match of the season.
Autumn Jenkins slammed a match-high 17 kills and made 12 digs for Delaware, while Katie Hillman also posted a double-double with 15 kills and 18 digs on the night. Chandler Bryant was the third Blue Hen to reach double figure kills with 14 during the contest, while she also had six blocks.
Julia Anderson handed out a season-high 54 assists for UD, while Ariel Shonk also set her season-best with 38 digs.
Jessica Lewis paced Towson with 16 kills, while Aimee Schubert recorded 30 assists and Anna Holehouse made 30 digs.
Delaware held a 24-21 lead in the opening set, but let it slip away as the Tigers eventually recorded a 29-27 victory to take the early lead. The Blue Hens were then in front 23-20 during the second frame, before Towson reeled off five consecutive points to go in front by two sets.
UD saw a five-point lead disappear late in the third stanza, but after the teams were knotted at 23-23, a Towson attack error and a kill by Daria Robinson put the Blue Hens on the board. Delaware was up just a point at 19-18 in the fourth set but then ran off six straight points, including the final five on Taylor Hollingsworth's serve, to force the deciding set.
The Blue Hens never trailed in the fifth set and exploded for six consecutive points, again while Hollingsworth was serving, to break a 5-5 tie and go in front 11-5. Towson eventually closed with one at 14-13, but Anderson finished off the match with her third kill of the night to complete the comeback.
Delaware remains on the road Sunday when the Blue Hens travel to CAA leader James Madison for a 3 p.m. match with the Dukes.
