PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) led the Blue Hens with three singles wins at the Penn Cissie Leary Invitational.
In Singles Flight B, LaMachia opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Yale's Sunday Swett. Following a loss to Andrea Kevakian (Columbia), LaMachia picked up a tough, come-from-behind 7-6, 5-7, 14-12 victory over Maryland's Olivia Gaudreault in addition to defeating Jaide Collins (St. John's).
LaMachia also paired with freshman Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) for the team's lone doubles win of the tournament. The duo defeated Georgetown, 6-0, before falling to Temple.
In more singles action, Hall collected two victories, also in Flight B. Hall earned the W against both Georgetown's Mimi Lynham and Drexel's Erin Bowsher.
Sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) also garnered two wins by defeating Jenny White, 6-1, 6-0, and Ryshena Providence, 6-5, 2-6, 12-10, both Drexel student-athletes.
“This weekend was the best our team has ever performed at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational. Each player had breakthrough moments and several played their best tennis that I've seen. In spite of the doubles scores, we came out fast and strong against great competition. All of the things that we've been working on in practice are translating into match play, which is always exciting. This tournament gives us a lot of motivation to continue the hard work and practice so we can keep improving.”
