Blue Hens Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Delaware held a two sets to one lead but could not put away the College of Charleston as the Blue Hen volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the Cougars Tuesday afternoon at TD Arena.
Charleston captured the thrilling match by set scores of 19-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13 as the Cougars improved to 9-8 overall and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware, which dropped its fourth consecutive match, fell to 8-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.
After the teams split the first four sets, the Blue Hens won the opening four points of the deciding frame and eventually took a 9-4 advantage on an Alexa Swann kill. However the Cougars responded with a five-point run to pull even, and after the teams were knotted at 11-11, used a pair of points to go in front by two. Delaware closed within 14-13 on a kill by Daria Robinson, but Charleston's Kennedy Madison posted a kill on the following point to give the Cougars the match.
Swann blasted a career-high 19 kills and hit .483 for the Blue Hens, while she also added a match-high seven blocks on the day. Katie Hillman and Raven Luckett each slammed 12 kills, while Autumn Jenkins notched her team-leading seventh double-double of the year with 11 kills and 16 digs.
Julia Anderson handed out a season-best 53 assists and set her career-high with 16 digs during the match, while Ariel Shonk contributed 15 digs for Delaware.
Melissa Morello paced Charleston with 18 kills and 18 digs, while Madison added 17 kills and Britney Vallez contributed 17 digs.
In the opening frame, Delaware broke a 12-12 deadlock by taking four consecutive points and led from there, winning the set on a Chandler Bryant kill. After the Cougars posted a four-point victory in the second set, Delaware used an 11-4 spurt midway through the third frame to take the stanza and go in front two sets to one. However Charleston edged the Blue Hens by three in the fourth set, before posting the comeback victory in the fifth.
Delaware is back on the road on Saturday when the Blue Hens head to Elon for a 7 p.m. match with the Phoenix at Alumni Gym.

• Shonk now has 1,686 career digs and needs three more to move into third place in UD history
• Luckett established her career-high in kills for the second consecutive match
• UD had four players reach double figure kills for the first time this season
