NEWARK, Del. -- Three Blue Hens recorded double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to William & Mary Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Tribe, which snapped a four-match losing skid while improving to 9-16 overall and 3-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association, took the match by set scores of 25-13, 15-25, 25-21, 26-24. Delaware, which was coming off a dramatic five-set victory over Elon Saturday night, fell to 12-13 overall and 4-8 in league play.
Katie Hillman recorded her second straight double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs to lead the Blue Hens, as she moved into 11th place on the UD career kills list. Autumn Jenkins added 11 kills and 15 digs for Delaware, while Alexa Swann also had 11 kills on the afternoon. Julia Anderson recorded her second consecutive double-double by handing out 39 assists and 15 digs.
UD libero Ariel Shonk led all players with 25 digs, moving into second place on the school digs list with 1,857 for her career.
Four Tribe players finished with 13 kills in a balanced William & Mary attack, while Sara Zumbach led the defensive effort with 22 digs.
William & Mary led by just one at 13-12 in the opening set, but then won the next 11 points as the Tribe took the early lead. However Delaware responded during the second frame, closing the set by taking 11 of the final 14 points to pull even at a set apiece.
UD trailed 18-16 during a tight third set, but won four of the next five points to go in front 20-19 on a kill by Jenkins. However the Tribe answered with a 6-1 spurt to claim the stanza and go in front two sets to one. The Blue Hens trailed for a majority of the fourth frame, before fighting off two match points to make it 24-24 on a pair of Jenkins kills. However the Tribe's Sydney Biniak followed with two kills of her own to put the match away for William & Mary.
Delaware returns to action on Saturday when the Blue Hens travel to Boston for a 4 p.m. match with Northeastern.
Match Notes:
• Hillman now has 1,237 career kills, and needs 29 more to move into UD's top 10 list
• Jenkins went over the 600 kills and 600 digs marks for her career
• The Tribe held a 9-1 block advantage, as UD tied for its lowest block total of the year
• William & Mary swept the season series from Delaware for the first time since 2005
