BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo shot 50 percent from the field and put four players in double figures as the Bulls led by double digits the entire second half in a 99-79 victory over Delaware in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday night at Alumni Arena.
Bulls guards Willie Conner and Jarryn Skeete each recorded their career-high by pouring in 23 and 20 points respectively for Buffalo, which improved to 7-6 on the year and won its third straight home game. Nikola Rakicevic also reached his career-high with 14 points while CJ Massinburg chipped in 13 for the Bulls, who knocked down 11 three-pointers, finished 22 of 28 from the foul line and handed out 21 assists.
Blue Hen senior forward Marvin King-Davis notched his sixth double-double of the season with team-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds for Delaware, which fell to 5-6 during its final non-league game of the season. Cazmon Hayes contributed 15 points on the evening, while fellow guards Kory Holden and Anthony Mosley finished with 13 points apiece.
Delaware shot 44.1 percent for the game, but was only 3 of 12 from behind the arc and connected on just 24 of 37 foul shots. The Blue Hens also committed 14 turnovers and were slightly out-rebounded by the Bulls, 39-35.
Buffalo went on a 28-9 run throughout a nine-minute stretch in the latter portion of the opening half, and eventually took a 45-29 lead into the break. King-Davis opened the second period with a pair of baskets but Buffalo countered with seven straight, going up 52-33 on a Conner three-pointer with 16:38 remaining.
The Blue Hens closed within 55-41 after a dunk by King-Davis, and after Buffalo pushed the margin back to 20, a Mosley layup made it 66-52 with 10:58 on the clock. Mosley added a pair of free throws as Delaware cut the margin to 83-70 with 4:37 left, but the Blue Hens would not get closer.
“We had a couple opportunities when we cut it to 14, and we wanted to put some game pressure on them but we just couldn't do it,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We just dug ourselves too deep a hole and couldn't climb out. We didn't execute the way we needed to and missed way too many free throws tonight. We have to pick ourselves up and get ready for a talented Hofstra team on Thursday.”
Delaware led 16-15 midway through the first half on a dunk by King-Davis, but Buffalo scored 12 consecutive points over the next three minutes to take a 27-16 advantage. Four minutes later David Kadiri scored on consecutive tip-ins to make it a 33-20 game, while the Bulls then used a seven-point spurt to go in front 42-24 with 1:06 to play.
It was still an 18-point game a minute later, before Hayes converted a layup in the final seconds to cut the Bulls advantage to 45-29 at the half. Delaware finished 0 of 4 from deep in the opening 20 minutes, and converted only 9 of 16 free throw attempts.
Delaware has a quick turnaround as the Blue Hens open Colonial Athletic Association play on Thursday with a 1 p.m. tip against Hofstra at the Mack Sports Complex.
Game Notes:
• Delaware lost its third consecutive game
• Holden (7) and Hayes (5) each extended their double figure scoring streaks
• Mosley grabbed a career-high nine rebounds
• Delaware allowed its most points since a 108-107 overtime win vs. Bryant on Dec. 21, 2013
• Buffalo reached the 90-point mark for third time this season
