HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad found itself in an unfamiliar situation Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to host High Point 15-10 in the season opener for both teams at Vert Stadium.
Delaware battled the host Panthers to a 7-7 stalemate at halftime but the hosts scored the first four goals of the second half and later scored three straight in the fourth quarter to hand the Blue Hens their first opening day setback since the 2002 season. The Hens had defeated High Point on opening day each of the last two seasons as well.
The game marked the first NCAA men's lacrosse game of the season, a game that the Hens (0-1) have traditionally played for over a decade.
Delaware senior attackman Beau Jones led the Hens with three goals and two assists while Tom Holland and Will Hirshmann each scored twice and freshman Zach Runberg dished out three assists. Conor Peaks registered 11 saves in goal for the Hens.
High Point (1-0), which scored four goals in each of the final three periods, got five goals each from Matt Thistle and Dan Lomas while Cole Carns had three goals. Lomas also dished out two assists.
Jones scored the Hens' only third quarter goal to cut the lead to 11-8 and Paul Major tallied with 11:22 left to narrow the margin to 12-9, but the Hens could never get closer than three goals over the final 25 minutes.
Hen Scratchings:
• Delaware will return home to face Bucknell in its home opener next Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium
• Blue Hen preseason All-American faceoff specialist Tyler Barbarich, who ranked No. 4 in the nation in 2014 when he won 63.7 percent of his faceoffs, managed to win just 6 of 16 Sunday as HPU's Jamie Piluso won 18 of 28 draws
• Jones recorded his third career hat trick for the Hens
• Hirschmann and Runberg were each making their collegiate debuts for Delaware
• Delaware had not lost a season opener since a 17-12 setback to Loyola in 2002
