NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team was unable to capitalize on a couple of last minute opportunities Sunday as the Blue Hens dropped a 67-64 decision to Drexel at the Bob Carpe
nter Center.
Delaware (13-13, 8-7 Colonial Athletic Association) brought the game to within two points with 24 seconds remaining, but a critical turnover allowed the Dragons (17-9, 11-4 CAA) to shoot free throws with :08 on the clock.
Drexel's Rachel Pearson hit 1-of-2 to give the Dragons the 67-64 advantage and UD was unable to get a basket as time expired as a three-pointer by Courtni Green under duress was off the mark.
Junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and sophomore Hannah Jardine (at left; St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) paced the Hens with 17 points apiece. Sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J/Paterson Kennedy) added 12 points and four assists while senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) contributed 11 points of her own.
Freshman Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led UD with six rebounds.
Sarah Curran went a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc and guided Drexel with 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
“This has kind of been a microcosm of what we've been this year. We have opportunities but then we shoot ourselves in the foot. We gave them too many leads and then we have to come fighting back. It's frustrating right now, but I think eventually we will make a stand and say enough is enough. We just have to keep working at it to find the right solution.”
Sophomore Erika Brown (at right)
“This is definitely tough. This is the second time we were down, came back and fought and made it a close game, but we just couldn't get the win.”
Sophomore Hannah Jardine
“It's really frustrating being so close, but not breaking through to get that great win or full comeback win. We were able to get out of the hole we dug ourselves in the beginning of the game, but we really shouldn't have put ourselves in that situation in the first place.”
