COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Delaware scored two first quarter goals, but offense was hard to come by after that and the Blue Hens dropped a 10-3 men's lacrosse decision at Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Delaware (1-2), coming off a thrilling 12-11 comeback victory over Bucknell last Saturday, could not continue the momentum against the Buckeyes in a rare indoor game.
The Hens took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter, but Ohio State (2-1) answered with five second quarter goals and never looked back. Delaware managed just one goal over the final 45 minutes of action.
Ohio State, which was earning votes in the USILA Top 20 poll, got five goals from Jesse King and two more from Colin Chell. King victimized the Hens for the second straight year after posting a goal and seven assists in the Buckeyes' 15-9 win last year at Delaware Stadium.
After OSU started the scoring on a goal by King 3:23 into the game, Delaware answered with consecutive unassisted goals by Brian Kormondy, the second which gave the Hens a 2-1 lead heading into the second stanza.
But King scored four goals in the second period, including three straight in the first nine minutes of the stanza, as Ohio State took control, eventually taking a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Delaware's Jackson Finigan got the Hens on the board again just over two minutes into the third quarter to cut the lead to 6-3, but Ohio State responded again, this time with two more goals in the period and two more in the final frame.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Kormondy has now scored a point in 24 straight games since the 2013 season
• Delaware senior Brett Anton started his first game since the 2012 season and recorded 12 saves
• Delaware's three goals were its lowest total since a 13-3 setback to Penn State on Apr. 23, 2011
• Blue Hen senior defender Brandon Worrall made his 2015 debut, coming back from a severe knee injury that ended his season abruptly early during the 2014 season. He had a shot and a groundball in a reserve role
• The game began a three-game road swing for the Hens, who will not return to Delaware Stadium until Mar. 3 vs. Holy Cross. The Hens will return to action next Friday, Feb. 20, at Mt. St. Mary's
