Big First Half Sends Delaware to 12-5 Victory Over Manhattan

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware jumped on Manhattan early with 10 first half goals and cruised to a 12-5 men's lacrosse victory at windy Delaware Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Delaware (4-5) snapped two-game losing streak as senior attackman Beau Jones (Germantown Academy/Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high four goals and dished out an assist, senior midfielder Brian Kormondy (Mullen/Highland Ranch, Colo./below left) added two goals and two assists, senior 
attackman Tom Holland (Calvert Hall/Baltimore, Md.) contributed three goals, and sophomore midfielder Jackson Finigan (Concord/Carlile/Deerfield Academy/Concord, Mass.) dished out three assists. Jones scored all four of his goals in the first 19 minutes, including three in the opening stanza.
Manhattan (0-8), one of just three winless teams in NCAA Division I, got two goals each from Marcel Godino and Andrew Hurst while goalkeeper Michael Zingaro posted 12 saves.
“It was a good way to get some momentum going for the rest of the season,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw of the victory. “I thought in the beginning of the game we did a great job of executing, we moved the ball well, we moved without the ball well, got to the spots where we were supposed to be, and made quality shots. I'm not sure we can play any better than we did in the first half. Beau (Jones) is really playing well for us this season. He is usually the guy distributing from behind the cage but today he got some excellent feeds and once he got them he put them in the net. We are very happy to get this win.”
Delaware outshot the Jaspers 41-34 and held a 31-22 advantage in groundballs. Senior Tyler Barbarich (Bridgewater-Raritan/Martinsville, N.J.) won 12 of 21 faceoffs for the Blue Hens while UD senior goalkeeper Brett Anton (Madison/Madison, N.J.) made 10 saves.
The game was marred by 16 penalties for 15:30 minutes as Delaware committed nine penalties for eight minutes and Jaspers had seven penalties for 7:30.
The Blue Hens scored three times in the opening four minutes and took a 5-0 advantage after the opening stanza. The Hens pushed the lead to 7-0 in the second quarter before the Jaspers finally got on the board with 9:03 left. Delaware lead 10-1 at the break and led 12-2 with 14:19 left in the final stanza before Manhattan scored the final three goals of the game.

• Delaware will continue its seven-game homestand Saturday when the Hens host Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. as part of Cancer Awareness Day
• Delaware freshmen Dean DiSimone and Mike Handlan each scored his first career goal
• The Hens committed 11 turnovers, their second lowest total of the season
• Delaware has won all five meetings with the Jaspers, including last year's 10-5 win when Jones dished out five assists
• Manhattan entered the game ranked last in the nation with a -12.71 scoring margin
