Delaware Softball Drops 7-2 Decision at Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. -- The University of Delaware softball team wrapped up its busy weekend on Sunday by dropping a 7-2 non-conference game at Central Arkansas.
Delaware, which fell to 5-5 on the season, concluded a chaotic stretch that saw the Blue Hens play five games in three states in less than 48 hours.
Central Arkansas, which improved to 8-5 on the campaign, struck first in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by Sam Forrest. A double by Hannah Stirton in the third made it a two-run game, while Stirton later crossed the plate when Bailey Reynolds reached on an error by UD shortstop Sarah Bencivenga to give the Bears a 3-0 cushion.
The following frame Forrest drilled a solo homer, while a sacrifice fly by Jessie Taylor increased the Central Arkansas margin to five. Delaware scored its only two runs of the day in the top of the fifth, as Danielle Wissinger tripled home Cailey Isaacs before pinch runner Mattie Nuccio scored on a groundout by Leanna Gearhart.
However the Bears got the two runs right back in the bottom half, while the Blue Hens could muster only a single by Jordan Cargile in their final two at bats.
Central Arkansas pitcher Kylee Studioso improved to 7-2 after allowing two runs on four hits in the complete game effort, while Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 4-2 for Delaware as she gave up five runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Delaware returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Norfolk State Spartan Clash, facing George Washington and Norfolk State on both days of the invitational.
