WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team defeated Marist, 7-3, and Western Carolina, 9-2, Friday on the first day of the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic hosted by UNCW.
Delaware (7-5) opened the scoring against Marist in the top of the first inning as Jessica Grisler led off with an infield single and eventually scored on a double steal. The Blue Hens loaded the bases in the fourth on three walks, before Cailey Isaacs worked a base on balls to force home Mattie Nuccio. Danielle Wissinger then lined a base hit to left, chasing home Mariah Kondravy to make it a three-run game.
Grisler opened the fifth with a triple, and she immediately crossed the plate when Giovanna Kolofer followed with a two-run blast to leftcenter. Later in the frame Carolyn Szymanski also belted a two-run homer to leftcenter as Delaware went up 7-0. The Red Foxes (2-3) got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Rebecca Freeman before adding an unearned run in the seventh, but would not get closer.
Szymanski went the distance in the circle for the Blue Hens, improving to 5-2 after allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out seven batters.
During UD's second game of the day Kondravy doubled home Grisler and Kolofer to put Delaware in front of Western Carolina in the bottom of the first. The Catamounts (2-4) quickly tied the contest by scoring twice in the top of the second off Blue Hen starter Kennedy Lester, but Kolofer put UD right back in the lead by driving home Leanna Gearhart with an RBI single in the bottom half.
The Blue Hens then broke the game open in the fourth, as Sarah Bencivenga drove home three runs with a bases-clearing double before Heather Oakley followed with a two-run homer to left. Wissinger put the finishing touches on the win by chasing home Kondravy with a single to left in the sixth.
Jordan Cargile, who fired 5.1 scoreless frames of relief, picked up her first win as a Blue Hen and improved to 1-1 on the year.
