WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 7-1, before falling to Western Carolina, 3-1, Saturday as the Blue Hens split a pair of games on the second day of the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic.
The Blue Hens (8-6) opened the scoring against the Aggies in the top of the second inning when Jessica Grisler doubled home Morgan Schroll and Leanna Gearhart, while a Sarah Bencivenga homer and an RBI single by Mariah Kondravy in the third made it a four-run game.
Grisler drilled a solo homer in the top of the fourth, before Raven Gray put North Carolina A&T (3-7) on the board with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame. Delaware then closed the scoring in the seventh when Danielle Wissinger led off by getting hit by a pitch before Shelby Jones blasted a two-run homer to leftfield.
UD starter Kennedy Lester improved to 2-1 on the year after allowing just one unearned run on two hits and striking out seven batters in four innings of work. Jordan Cargile earned her fourth save of the campaign as she tossed three innings of scoreless relief.
Heather Oakley finished 3 for 3 with a walk for Delaware, while Grisler went 2 for 5 with three RBI.
The Blue Hens then jumped in front of Western Carolina (3-5) in the top of the first as Grisler walked and eventually scored on a two-out single to center by Oakley. However the Catamounts went ahead during the bottom of the third on run-scoring singles by Taylor Sigmon and Courtney Price. Western Carolina tacked on an insurance run when Heather Chastain doubled home Price in the bottom of the sixth.
Delaware put the tying runners on base in the seventh when Gearhart and Grisler both reached on errors, but Sigmon struck out Giovanna Kolofer to end the game.
