NEWARK, Del. -- Jessica Grisler became the Blue Hens' career leader in hits while Lisa Stacevicz continued her torrid batting at the plate with four hits as the University of Delaware softball team split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with Drexel Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
Delaware (14-9, 1-1 CAA) rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings during the opener, before Drexel (7-7, 1-1 CAA) posted a 6-4 win in the nightcap in both teams' conference opener.
The Blue Hens were the visiting team on the scoreboard in their home park after the series was moved from Philadelphia to Newark due to unplayable field conditions at Drexel following Friday's snowstorm.
Grisler tied the UD hits mark with a looping single to center during the top of the seventh of the opener, before she laced a line drive that just eluded a dive by Drexel leftfielder Sharon Zamora for a double to open up the nightcap.
Grisler now has 206 hits for her career, one more than previous record holder Mandy Welch, who accumulated 205 from 1999-2002. Grisler also scored one run on the day, and is one run shy of Welch's career mark of 119.
Stacevicz, who finished 4 for 7 with three doubles on the day, put the Blue Hens on the board during the opener in the top of the third with an RBI double that chased home Morgan Schroll. The Dragons answered with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to go in front, but Delaware pieced together a rally in the seventh.
Leanna Gearhart singled home Danielle Wissinger to make it a one-run game, before Giovanna Kolofer crossed the plate on Grisler's single to pull the Blue Hens even. Sarah Bencivenga then opened the eighth with a double, and one out later she scored the winning run when Mariah Kondravy laced a single to right.
Carolyn Szymanski then allowed a two-out double to Sylvia Llamas in the bottom half before getting Liana Newton to pop out to shortstop to end the game and pick up her ninth win of the season.
Stacevicz doubled home Grisler to give Delaware the early lead in the second game, but Drexel scored single runs in the first and second before adding two in the third to go in front 4-1.
Wissinger blasted a solo homer to rightcenter in the fourth, and after the Dragons answered in the fifth, Stacevicz doubled home Gearhart to make it a 5-3 game in the top of the sixth. However Drexel added an insurance run in the bottom half, and the Blue Hens could only muster an unearned tally in the seventh.
Delaware remains home on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host Lehigh in a non-league doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
Hen Scratchings:
• Wissinger's home run was the second of her career
• Stacevicz has hit safely in eight consecutive games, going 15 for 24 (.625) with eight doubles in that stretch
• Gearhart went 4 for 7 on the day and posted her first career three-hit game in the nightcap
• Bencivenga and Szymanski each finished the day with three hits
• Delaware has not lost a season series to Drexel since 2010
