NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped the first game of its doubleheader against Lehigh, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium before the second game was called due to darkness.
The Mountain Hawks were leading 3-1 through three and a half innings when the game was called, so the result and all statistics from the contest will not count.
Lehigh (16-3), which won its seventh consecutive game, scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning when Jessica Calvini grounded out with the bases loaded to drive home Nicole Yozzo.
Cassie Waggy delivered an RBI single in the top of the third before two more runs scored on an error by Blue Hen third baseman Heather Oakley as the Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 4-0.
Delaware (14-10) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as after the Blue Hens loaded the bases on a Lisa Stacevicz double, a Sarah Bencivenga walk and an Oakley single, Stacevicz crossed the plate on a fielder's choice groundout by Jordan Cargile.
In the fifth Jessica Grisler belted a solo home run to rightfield, making it a 4-2 game and tying the school record by scoring the 119th run of her career. However Morgan Decker doubled home Yozzo in the top of the sixth for Lehigh to conclude the scoring.
Delaware put its first two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh after Shelby Jones walked and Leanna Gearhart legged out a bunt single, but Lehigh pitcher Emily Bausher retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
Oakley finished 3 for 3 at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Stacevicz continued her torrid hitting with a pair of doubles.
Delaware returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday with a 12 noon home doubleheader against UNCW.
