NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen sophomore Carolyn Szymanski fired a one-hit shutout as the University of Delaware softball team took the rubber game of the three-game weekend series by posting a 3-0 victory over UNCW Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

Delaware improved to 16-11 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the victory, while

the Seahawks dropped to 14-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Szymanski posted her third shutout of the season, allowing just a single to UNCW second baseman Lauren Moore in the top of the fifth inning, while picking up her 11th win of the year.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Blue Hens pushed across a pair of runs.

Sarah Bencivenga and Heather Oakley opened the frame with singles, and one out later Bencivenga crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Seahawks pitcher Casey Rowland. Shelby Jones then drove a single to leftfield, allowing pinch runner Morgan Schroll to score the second run of the inning.

After Szymanski escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth, Jessica Grisler singled home Mattie Nuccio in the bottom half to close the scoring.

Bencivenga finished with two hits for Delaware while Grisler, Oakley, Szymanski, Jones and Danielle Wissinger added a hit apiece.

Delaware travels to Rider on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader with the Broncs.
