LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The University of Delaware softball team erupted for 21 runs and 23 hits as the Blue Hens swept a non-conference doubleheader from Rider, 10-0 and 11-3, Wednesday afternoon at Herb & Joan Young Field.
Danielle Wissinger (left) posted a team-high five hits on the day, while Leanna Gearhart added three triples and Mariah Kondravy (below) homered in both ends of the twinbill. Sarah Bencivenga contributed three doubles for the Blue Hens (18-11), who reached double figures in consecutive games for the first since defeating Norfolk State and Canisius last March.
Delaware immediately took charge in the opener by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, all coming with two outs. Heather Oakley singled home Mattie Nuccio to open the scoring, while Kondravy followed with a two-run homer. Later in the frame Giovanna Kolofer ripped a two-run double, chasing home Carolyn Szymanski and Shelby Jones to make it a 5-0 game.
Jessica Grisler opened the second with a walk and one out later scored on a Bencivenga double, before the Blue Hens added four insurance runs in the third. Gearhart delivered a two-run triple to put Delaware up eight, before RBI doubles by Wissinger and Bencivenga closed the scoring.
Delaware set a school record with six doubles during the game while Grisler finished with a hit and a walk, becoming UD's career leader with 292 total bases.
Meanwhile Szymanski posted her second consecutive shutout by twirling a three-hitter against the Broncs (6-18), striking out seven while not walking a batter to improve to 12-5 on the season.
The second game was more of the same, as Kondravy doubled home Wissinger before two more runs crossed the plate on an error to give Delaware a 3-0 lead in the first inning. An RBI single by Wissinger and a run-scoring double by Bencivenga made it a 5-1 game in the second, while an RBI groundout by Nuccio and a triple by Gearhart increased the margin to six in the third.
Gearhart tripled home Cailey Isaacs in the fifth before scoring on a Wissinger groundout, while Kondravy belted her second two-run shot of the day in the sixth to cap the Blue Hen scoring.
Kelly Lupton, who allowed just one run in four innings of relief, picked up the win and improved to 2-2 on the campaign.
Delaware returns to Colonial Athletic Association action this weekend with a three-game series at the College of Charleston.
Hen Scratchings:
• Delaware is now 14-1-1 against Rider since 2007 and has won six straight over the Broncs
• Gearhart now leads the CAA with six triples this season
• Kondravy has blasted a team-high four home runs and is tied with Lisa Stacevicz for the team lead with 10 doubles
