4/11/2015 7:28:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Down 5-3 at halftime and trailing 7-5 heading into the final stanza, Delaware (4-9, 0-3 CAA) sent the game into overtime on a goal by senior attackman Tom Holland (Calvert Hall/Baltimore, Md.) with
just six seconds left in regulation, but the Hens could not complete the comeback as Drexel's Cole Shafer scored just under two minutes into the extra session to clinch the victory.
The Blue Hens, who suffered their fourth straight setback and remained winless in CAA play, got three goals from Holland while senior Brian Kormondy (Mullen/Highland Ranch, Colo./at left) added two goals and an assist, sophomore midfielder Jackson Finigan (Concord-Carlisle/Concord, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist, and senior defender Matt Matsko (Caesar Rodney/Dover, Del.) and senior attackman Beau Jones (Germantown Academy/Philadelphia, Pa.) also tallied goals.
Senior goalkeeper Brett Anton (Madison/Madison, N.J.) recorded 15 saves.
Holland, who also tied the game at 7-7 with a goal with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter, tallied his 50th career goal during the game as did Kormondy, who now has 51 for his career. Senior defender Brandon Worrall (West Windsor North/Plainsboro, N.J.) recorded his 48th career caused turnover during the game to move into second place all-time at Delaware.
Drexel (6-6, 2-1 CAA), which won its second straight game and its fourth in the last five outings, got three goals and an assist from Shafer while Ryan Belka added two goals and two assists and Robert Frazee and Mitch de Snoo each scored twice. Michael Kay dished out a game-high three assists.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one quarter but Drexel battled back to score all three goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead at the break and added two more in the third for the 7-4 lead.
But Delaware refused to give in during the final quarter as the Hens scored three goals in a span of just 2:09 to tie the game at 7-7. Kormondy scored a man-up goal with 8:31 left in regulation, Jones tallied at the 7:29, and Holland knotted the contest at the 6:12 mark.
Drexel regained the lead on a goal by deSnoo with 4:19 left, but the Hens forced overtime as Holland scored off a feed from Kormondy with just six ticks left on the clock.
During the extra session, Drexel won the faceoff but the Hens got possession after Anton made a save off a shot by Drexel's Nick Saputo seconds into the extra session. But Delaware could not take advantage as Drexel's Jake Kiernan caused a turnover by Holland one minute later and Shafer scored the game-winner just 58 seconds after that.
