NEWARK, Del. -- The No. 23 ranked James Madison softball team pounded out 25 runs on 30 hits as the Dukes swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from the University of Delaware, 13-0 and 12-3, Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Dukes, who have now won 27 consecutive games, improved to 36-6 overall and a perfect 13-0 in league play following the pair of five-inning victories. Delaware dropped to 23-17 overall, including 5-8 in the conference.
JMU scored in all five innings during the opener, pushing across two runs in the first before a three-run second made it a 5-0 game. RBI triples by Niki Prince and Erica Field increased the margin to seven in the top of the third, while two-run doubles by Morgan Tolle and Ashley Samuels highlighted a five-run fourth inning for the Dukes.
JMU pitcher Megan Good was one out away from a no-hitter when Blue Hen rightfielder Jessica Grisler lined a pitch up the middle that glanced off Good, giving Delaware its only hit of the game. Good improved to a perfect 21-0 in the circle following her one-hit shutout, while UD starter Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 16-9 for the Blue Hens.
The Dukes again wasted little time in taking control of the nightcap, scoring twice in the opening frame before an RBI double by Field in the second put JMU in front by three. Field knocked home two more in the fourth while an RBI single by Jailyn Ford made it a 7-0 game, before Delaware rallied in the bottom half.
With one out Leanna Gearhart legged out a bunt single, and following a single by center by Sarah Bencivenga, UD freshman Mariah Kondravy blasted a three-run homer over the fence in leftcenter. Kondravy now has 10 home runs this season, second most in a UD single season and tied for the CAA lead.
However the Dukes answered right back with five runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away. Ford moved to 13-4 for JMU following the win, while UD starter Kiersten Coffman dropped to 1-2 for Delaware.
The Blue Hens and Dukes will conclude their three-game weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 noon.
Hen Scratchings:
• JMU was just the second ranked opponent to visit Delaware, along with No. 24 Princeton in 1994
• Kondravy's 10 homers are three shy of the UD single season mark of 13 set by Michelle Grap in 2010
• Kondravy is tied for fourth on the Blue Hen career homers list
• Lisa Stacevicz returned to the lineup after missing the last 11 games with mono
• The Dukes have now won the last 10 meetings between the two schools
