PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Former University of Delaware men's golf standout Justin Martinson will appear on the final episode of the Golf Channel's “Big Break The Palm Beaches” tonight (Monday, April 20) at 9 p.m.
The 23rd season of the show began with 12 golfers, but is now down to Martinson and Georgia Tech alumnus Richy Werenski. The final episode from the season, which was filmed late last summer at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., will be shown at 9 p.m. and again at 10 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
Martinson and Werenski will face off in an 18-hole match to determine the season's winner.
The winner of the competition receives a sponsor's exemption into the Barbasol Championship, a PGA Tour event to be played July 16-19 in Opelika, Ala., along with other prizes.
Martinson, who graduated from Delaware in 2011, is one of the top players in Blue Hen history, as his 73.53 career average round is the lowest by any Delaware golfer. He also has recorded the two lowest rounds in UD history, as well as the two lowest two-round totals.
Martinson won the 2010 CAA Championship, and went on to tie for 13th place at the NCAA Regionals in Alpharetta, Ga. He was a second team all-conference pick that year, before earning first team honors as a senior in 2010-11.
"Most college coaches try to get their players to swing their driver at about 80 percent, hoping that will enable them to keep the ball on the golf course," said UD head coach Mike Keogh, who has seen two Blue Hens win CAA titles during his tenure in Martinson and Greg Matthias. "Justin was really the only player that I've had that it didn't matter if he swung 110 percent. He has an 'Iron Byron' swing (the PGA ball and club testing machine). He drops it back in the perfect path about 100 percent of the time. If he ever gets the lid off the hole more consistently, we will all be watching him on Sunday afternoons."
Additionally Martinson won the Delaware State Golf Association's Open championship in 2009 and 2011, and also captured the 2010 DSGA Amateur.
Martinson has captured four professional wins on mini tours since turning professional in 2011.
