PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Mariah Kondravy homered in both games while four Blue Hen pitchers combined on 10 scoreless innings as the University of Delaware softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of UMES, 11-0 and 17-0, Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 27-18 following the pair of five-inning victories, scored in all five frames during the opener. Leanna Gearhart cracked her first career homer to open the scoring, while a Lisa Stacevicz RBI single made it a 2-0 game after one inning. Danielle Wissinger singled home Shelby Jones in the second, before Kondravy belted a two-run shot in the third to increase the margin to five.
Sarah Bencivenga singled home Giovanna Kolofer during a three-run fourth, while Jessica Grisler singled home a pair in a three-run fifth inning rally that closed the scoring for the Blue Hens. Gearhart was 3 for 4 with three RBI during the victory, while Grisler and Bencivenga added two hits apiece. Carolyn Szymanski fired a pair of hitless innings in the circle, before Kelly Lupton earned her fourth win of the year after tossing three scoreless frames of relief.
Delaware then jumped on UMES, which dropped to 7-26 on the year, with six runs in the top of the first inning of the nightcap. Kondravy singled home Grisler with the first run, while Stacevicz followed with an RBI double to make it a three-run game. Jones then singled home a run, before an RBI single by Kolofer capped the outburst.
The Blue Hens put the game away in the second with a 10-run explosion on eight hits. Gearhart opened the frame with a triple, and she immediately scored on a Bencivenga double. Heather Oakley then blasted a grant slam, while Wissinger added a two-run homer to put Delaware in front 13-0. Kondravy capped with rally with a three-run shot to leftcenter, giving her 12 longballs on the season, one shy of the UD single season record.
Kondravy, whose 44 RBI this season are also one away from the Blue Hen single season mark, went 4 for 4 with four RBI during the triumph. Grisler, Gearhart, Jones and Wissinger added two hits apiece for UD, which pounded out 30 hits on the day.
Kiersten Coffman improved to 3-2 after scattering six hits in four scoreless innings of work, before Taylor Curran fired a hitless fifth.
Delaware returns to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a three-game series at Hofstra.
