SOUTHPORT, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team will wrap up its 2014-15 regular season this weekend when the Blue Hens compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at St. James Plantation.
For the third consecutive year the conference tournament will be held on the par 72, 6,784-yard Founders Club course at St. James Plantation, with the winning team and the individual medalist earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship.
Nine teams will compete in the three-day, 54-hole event including the Blue Hens, College of Charleston, Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, James Madison, UNCW, Towson, and William & Mary. Action will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday's play starting at 8 a.m. with split tees.
Four freshmen will compete in the tournament for the Blue Hens, including Kieran Purcell who has averaged a team-best 74.33 shots per round. Purcell has appeared in all 10 invitationals this season, and placed second at the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 20-21.
Fellow newcomer Jack Gianniny is right behind Purcell with a 74.37 average round, and has also participated in every tournament during the year. Gianniny leads Delaware with five top 20 finishes on the season, including a second place finish at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational on Mar. 30-31.
Junior Kyle Martin, the third Blue Hen to appear in all 10 invitationals this season, ranked third on the squad by averaging 74.93 shots per round. Martin has posted a team-high three top 10 finishes on the campaign, tying for third place at the Navy Fall Classic and Wildcat Invitational. Martin tied for 19th at the CAA Championships in 2014.
