HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware softball team mustered just four hits on the day as the Blue Hens dropped a pair of 8-0 decisions to Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
The Pride, which won the opener in five innings and the nightcap in six frames, improved to 29-11-1 overall and 13-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware dropped to 27-20 overall and 5-11 in league play following the two defeats.
Hofstra took the early lead in the opener when Kim Smith belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Pride a quick 2-0 advantage. The Blue Hens looked to answer in the top of the fifth when Delaware loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a Hofstra error, but Morgan Lashley got UD shortstop Leanna Gearhart to fly out to left to end the threat.
The Pride then put the game away by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Michaela Transue singled home the first two runs of the frame, while a two-run single by Lacey Clark made it a six-run contest. Later in the inning Erin Trippi worked a bases loaded walk to force home a run, before Clark scored on a passed ball to end the game.
Lashley allowed only a first inning single to Gearhart as she moved to 17-1 on the year, while UD pitcher Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 16-11 after surrendering all eight runs on just five hits.
Brittany Allocca drilled a two-run homer to put Hofstra in front during the bottom of the second of the nightcap, while an RBI double by Caryn Bailey later in the frame made it a 3-0 game. Clark and Trippi delivered RBI hits during a four-run fifth inning for the Pride, before Clark doubled home Bailey in the sixth to put the game away.
Hofstra pitcher Taylor Pirone scattered just three singles to improve to 12-10 on the year, while Blue Hen starter Kiersten Coffman fell to 3-3 after giving up seven runs in four and a third innings.
Gearhart, Jessica Grisler and Giovanna Kolofer had the three Delaware hits.
The Blue Hens and Pride will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday with a 12 noon contest at Bill Edwards Stadium.
