HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Hofstra pitchers Morgan Lashley and Taylor Pirone combined on a three-hit shutout as the Pride defeated the University of Delaware softball team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Hofstra, which did not allow a run during the weekend sweep, improved to 30-11-1 overall and 14-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens, who have dropped eight consecutive league games, fell to 27-21 overall and 5-12 in conference action.
The Pride scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a hit, as after Hofstra loaded the bases on three walks, Erin Trippi was hit by a pitch to force home Caryn Bailey.
Delaware looked to answer in the fourth when Jessica Grisler led off with a double to leftfield and moved to third when Leanna Gearhart followed with a single to right. However Lashley recovered to retire the next three Blue Hen batters to keep UD off the board.
Lacey Clark then crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth when Trippi reached on a throwing error by Blue Hen third baseman Heather Oakley, before Brielle Pietrafesa scored on a groundout by Brittany Allocca to close the scoring.
Lashley improved to 18-1 for the Pride after firing 4.1 innings of scoreless ball, before Pirone picked up her fourth save of the year with 2.2 frames of relief. Delaware pitcher Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 16-12 despite allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with five strikeouts.
Delaware plays its final non-conference games of the season on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Saint Peter's.
