NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen freshman Mariah Kondravy blasted two home runs while junior Kiersten Coffman fired a three-hit shutout as the University of Delaware softball team earned a doubleheader split with Towson Friday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Tigers (34-19, 9-10 CAA) took the opener 5-2, before Delaware (30-22, 6-13 CAA) posted a 4-0 victory in the nightcap as the teams split the conference twinbill. Delaware was eliminated from CAA Tournament contention with the opening loss, but did manage to record the fifth 30-win season in school history during the second game triumph.
Kondravy opened the scoring in the nightcap with an opposite field home run to left in the bottom of the second inning, while an RBI double by Giovanna Kolofer later in the frame put the Blue Hens up a pair.
The Blue Hens tacked on a run in the third as Leanna Gearhart led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Bencivenga, and scored when Kondravy laced a single to rightcenter.
Kondravy then opened the sixth with a solo shot to straightaway centerfield, becoming Delaware's single season home run leader with 14 longballs on the year.
She broke the previous record of 13 homers set by Michelle Grap during the 2010 campaign.
Coffman (left) then retied the side in order during the seventh to seal her first shutout of the season and improve to 4-3 on the year. Towson put runners on first and third with nobody out in the top of the third, but Coffman retired the final 15 batters from there to earn her second career shutout.
Towson took the lead in the opener with two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Brook Miko and a run-scoring double by Missy McCormick, while a sacrifice fly by Holiday Cahill the following frame made it a 3-0 game.
Daria Edwards delivered an RBI single before Miko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the third to increase the Tigers' advantage to five, before Delaware got on the board during the bottom of the frame. Kolofer and Jessica Grisler led off with singles, and two outs later both came around to score when Kondravy singled up the middle.
However that would be the final scoring of the contest, as McCormick gave up just the two runs on seven hits to improve to 18-6 on the season. Grisler and Gearhart each had two hits during the contest for the Blue Hens, while Grisler's run scored was her 40th of the year, a new UD single season mark.
Delaware concludes its 2015 campaign with a 1 p.m. contest against Towson on Saturday, as Grisler and fellow senior Heather Oakley will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to playing their final collegiate games.
Hen Scratchings:
• Kondravy took over the CAA lead with 14 home runs
• Kondravy also set the UD single season record for total bases with 113 this year
• Grisler's 64 hits this season are third most in a Blue Hen season

• Gearhart also made a phenomenal over the shoulder catch in the top of the second of the nightcap to save a run
