NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team held a one-goal advantage with 24 minutes remaining in the game, but #17 James Madison posted four unanswered goals to defeat the Hens, 10-7, at Delaware Stadium Friday evening.
The second-seeded Dukes (14-4) topped the third-seeded Blue Hens (11-7) in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals for the second consecutive season. JMU will now face fourth-seeded Towson, which knocked off the top-seeded Hofstra Pride earlier in the night, Sunday at 1 p.m. for the league title.
Junior Shannon Hawley (left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) led Delaware with two goals while five other Hens each posted a single tally on the night.
In what was a back-and-forth affair, no team ever led by more than two goals until the final 11 minutes. The second half began as a high-scoring onslaught with both squads registering six goals within an eight-minute span. The tempo slowed down over the remaining 20 minutes as JMU pushed ahead for the win.
Alex ZaugraJunior Jaci Gordon recorded three goals and an assist for the Dukes while classmate Taylor Gress notched two goals and an assist. Schylar Healy earned the win with five saves.
“We knew it was going to be a battle tonight. In the second half, we felt we could break them down offensively. We wanted to be patient and let the ball do the work. We got some great opportunities, but unfortunately we didn't convert and capitalize when we needed to. This one will hurt, but that's how sports work. There are highs and lows. This wasn't the Cinderella story that we wanted, but I'm proud of the overall team's effort tonight.”
Caitlin McCartney finishes her career tops for the Hens with 186 draw controls and second with 86 caused turnovers.
· McCartney also set a new single-season record with 73 draw controls.
· Erin Wein tallied three caused turnovers on the night and concludes the year with a Delaware single-season record of 38 in addition to a career-record 87 for the Blue Hens.
· Kara Dattellas (at right) added four draw controls and a goal for the Hens.
· Delaware is now 1-5 all-time against James Madison in the CAA Tournament.
· JMU has won eight straight and 11 of the last 13 against the Hens.
