WILMINGTON, N.C. – After a heartbreaking loss in game one of the series Friday, the University of Delaware fell behind early Saturday and never threatened UNCW as the host Seahawks defeated the Blue Hens 15-3 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
After a tight game one, the outcome of Saturday's game was never in doubt as UNCW (31-12, 14-3 CAA) scored 10 runs in the first five innings on its way to a decisive victory.
Jim ShermanUNCW hit UD starter Ron Marinaccio hard in the first as Corey Dick and Gavin Stupienski each knocked in a run to give the Seahawks an early 2-0 advantage.
After UNCW added a run in the third and fourth innings, the Seahawks put the game out of Delaware's reach with a six-run fifth inning.
The Seahawks registered six hits in the frame and five UNCW batters recorded at least one RBI in the inning.
UNCW added to its lead in the sixth inning when Kennard McDowell launched a solo home run and Zach Shields supplied an RBI single to give the Seahawks a 12-0 lead.
One of the few signs of life Delaware (18-19, 7-10 CAA) showed at the plate came in the seventh inning. Joe Giacchino slapped a two-run double down the left field line to give UD its first runs of the game. Zach Lopes then knocked in UD's third run on an RBI single, but those would be the only runs of the day for the Blue Hens.
Delaware used five pitchers in the defeat with Marinaccio allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work. The southpaw was credited with his third loss of the season and is winless in his last three starts.
The Blue Hens and UNCW will wrap up the series Sunday with game three set for 2 p.m.
