GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced Wednesday that University of Delaware junior Elyse Andrews (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) was named the recipient of the IWLCA Division I Community Awareness Award.
The Community Awareness Award recognizes student-athletes who have contributed significantly to their community in a given year. These students have given their time and energy to support and develop athlete-community relations and have distinguished themselves from their peers.
Kateri Linville. “She is a dynamic individual and a caring teammate who brings a tremendous sense of pride and purpose to the Delaware lacrosse program. Her work with the B+ Foundation touched many hearts as it was a
special year for our team and our B+ Hero, Abby!”
Andrews, a pre-med honors student who maintains a 3.9 cumulative GPA, is the epitome of an unsung hero who always strives to make a difference in the lives of others daily in addition to dedicating herself to academics and a Blue Hens women's lacrosse program that is on the rise to national prominence.
In the past year alone, Andrews has dedicated over 300 hours to community service endeavors including The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, Exceptional Care for Children, Christiana Health System, AI DuPont Children's Hospital, Milcroft Nursing Home and the Delaware Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
With her efforts and leadership with The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, B+ Heroes and UDance, Andrews (shown at right with B+ Hero Abby) was a key component in helping raise nearly $1.3 million for the largest philanthropic student-run event on Delaware's campus. She will continue her commitment with UDance as the Team Liaisons Director during her senior year.
“I am most honored and humbled by this award,” Andrews commented. “I have been blessed with the opportunity of working with individuals and organizations dedicated to community service. This is really an award for my UD women's lacrosse teammates and their efforts in the community with the B+ Foundation. It's also a team award for the tremendous staff at Exceptional Care for Children and my fellow UDance Executive Board members.”
She continued, “Also, this is a team award for the amazing children whom I have met and have been affected by childhood cancer or have unique medical technology dependencies such as ventilators and feeding tubes. Finally, this award is for our B+ Hero, Abby. She has inspired our entire team to push ourselves beyond what we thought possible.”
Fellow award winners include Christina Luca (University of New Haven) and Mandy Buell (Gettysburg College). All award honorees will be honored at the IWLCA's All-American Banquet on June 6 in Valley Forge, Pa.
Earlier this season, Andrews was one of five Division I women's lacrosse student-athletes to be named a finalist for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award.
