Four Blue Hen Crews Qualify for Semifinals on Day One of Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Four University of Delaware boats earned a spot in the semifinals of their respective competitions Friday on day one of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
The UD Varsity Fours crew was the first Blue Hen boat to take the water Friday and was able to qualify for the semifinals with a second place finish in their heat. The crew, led by coxswain Hayley Diverio, posted a time of 7:47.74 and finished 3.90 seconds behind heat winner Temple.
The second Delaware boat to compete Friday was the Varsity Eights crew. Coxswain Molly Gardner led the boat to a third place finish with a time of 7:09.03, which was fast enough to qualify for the Varsity Eights Rep Friday afternoon. Duquesne and Dayton were the top two finishers in the race, while Iona and La Salle finished in fourth and fifth place.
In the Varsity Eights Rep, the Delaware crew was able to qualify for Saturday's semifinals with a time of 7:17.35. UD notched a third place finish with Lehigh and North Carolina claiming the top two spots.
The Delaware Novice Fours crew missed qualifying for Saturday's semifinals by 16 seconds as the boat completed the race in 8:56.44. UD's time earned them a fourth place finish, while Saint Joseph's won the heat and Grand Valley State and Philadelphia University finished second and third respectively.
The Blue Hen Novice Eights boat tallied Delaware's lone race victory Friday. Coxswain Alison Gibney helped the boat post 7:23.68, which was .53 seconds faster than runner-up North Carolina and was enough for a spot in the semifinals.
The final boat to race on day one for the Hens was the Second Varsity Eights crew. Coxswain Jamie Noce led the UD crew to a third place finish, which earned a spot in Saturday's semifinal race. The boat tallied a time of 7:32.76, while Drexel and North Carolina took the top two spots.
The second day of competition of the Dad Vail Regatta will consisit of the semifinals and finals of each competition. The action will commence Saturday at 7 a.m. and will be televised from 1-5 p.m. in the Philadelphia region on WPVI-TV and live streamed on 6abc.com and ESPN3.
