BALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware women's soccer squad got the 2015-16 athletics season off to an exciting start Friday night as junior Natalie Zelenky's second goal of the game early in the second overtime period lifted the Blue Hens to a 2-1 win over host Loyola at the Ridley Athletics Complex.
Zelenky (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who recorded her second career multiple-goal game, tallied the game-winner just 2:59 into the second extra session as she took feeds from junior Maddie Brosler (Millis Public HS/St. Millis, Mass.) and sophomore Abby Thomas (Severna Park/Severna Park, Md.) at the top of the box and fired a shot past the Greyhounds goalkeeper.
Delaware (1-0) won its season opener for the second straight year and downed Loyola (0-1) by a 2-1 score in overtime for the second time in three seasons.
“It's a great feeling to get that first win, especially on the road and in such a dramatic fashion,” said Delaware 26th year head coach Scott Grzenda. “Natalie had a great game and her second goal was a fantastic volley. It's great that our team played well and that we played for each other. Now we need to get ready for a tough Army team on Sunday.”
Zelenky opened the scoring just 8:33 into the game when she took a feed from junior Michelle McEnroe (Hillsborough/Hillsborough, N.J.) and Brosler to give the Hens a 1-0 lead. That advantage stood until midway through the second half when Loyola's Rosy Hayes scored with 29:30 left in regulation to tie things at 1-1.
Neither team scored in the first overtime period, setting the stage for Zelenky's heroics.
The Blue Hens will return to action Sunday when they host Army West Point at 1 p.m. at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. Admission is free.
