Dave Brock following the scrimmage. “We run around and we are going to have the ability to play a lot of guys. I deliberately just watch from the back and it looks like we have guys who can run and tackle. We tackled today as well as we have in a long time. We will keep running and hitting, keep playing great run defense, and force people to throw the ball.”
Among the defensive highlights were interceptions from junior safety Ryan Torzsa, sophomore linebacker Tommy Wilmoth, freshman linebacker Armen Ware, sophomore linebacker Charles Bell,
and sophomore All-American defensive tackle Blaine Woodson, who knocked the ball up in the air at the line of scrimmage and dover to snatch the ball just before it hit the ground.
Offensively the Blue Hens put a couple of nice drives together led by redshirt freshman Joe Walker (top left) and Blake Rankin (below left) who are battling for the starting quarterback spot. Walker put together the longest drive, running for a big gain on his own and completing long passes to sophomore Diante Cherry (at right) and redshirt freshman Tre Brown. Junior running back Wes Hills ended the drive with a short touchdown run. Running backs Kareem Williams, Thomas Jefferson, and Eric Patton all had impressive runs during the day.
“We had some nice drives today but we were victimized by some drops,” said Brock. “We made too many mistakes offensively but overall I was pleased. We put the quarterbacks in some challenging situations today and tried to see what type of decisions they made. We saw some good things today but we just have to play cleaner and keep working at it. I'm not sure if either (quarterback) did enough today to make my mind up (about the starter). We'll watch the tapes and see what it looks like. We don't have a lot of time left.”
Delaware will open the season on Friday, Sept. 4 when the Blue Hens host Jacksonville (Fla.) at 7 p.m. as part of Delaware Day at Delaware Stadium.
