NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team rallied to take a 2-1 lead into halftime, but Fairfield University tied things up in the 64th minute as the two teams concluded Sunday's match at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium with a 2-2 tie in double overtime.
The Stags (0-0-2) held the Hens (1-0-1) scoreless for the first 41 minutes of the game before junior
All-American Guillermo Delgado (below right; Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) received a cross from senior Joe Dipre (at left; Betchworth, England/London Freemen's School) and sailed it in from nine yards out.
Sophomore Carlos Perales (L'Alcúdia de Crespins, Spain/Colegio Claret Xàtiva) put Delaware ahead in the 45th minute by dumping a pass from Dipre into the left corner from two yards out.
Jordan Emsley collected the tying goal in the 64th minute as his shot floated just over the hands of Hens freshman goalie Blai Palmi.
In the 71st minute, UD junior transfer Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) launched a shot from the left side, but luck was not on his side as it ricocheted off the right post for the game to remain tied.
In overtime action, Fairfield appeared to have notched the golden goal in the 100th minute, but it was waved off as the Stags were called offsides on the play.
Neither team was able to get a shot off before time ex
pired in the second overtime.
Palmi finished the game with two saves while Matt Turner registered three saves for Fairfield.
“We had some good chances today, but you have to give credit to Fairfield as well because they had their chances as well. We're very happy about the response we got after giving up a silly goal early on. We have a young team. We're going to use this next week to look over some film, touch on things and see what we can do better. There are lots of improvements to be made and we need to have the patience to make sure we're developing the best that we can.”
Freshman Robert Gillin
“We started off a little slow, but we got two goals back quickly before halftime. It's disappointing to not come out with the win. We need to get a quicker start so it'll be easier from then on. It was a hard fought tie, so we'll use that as motivation to get wins in the next few games. It's a long season.”
