DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team opened play at the UNH Holly Young Invitational with an impressive three-set victory over the host Wildcats Friday night at Lundholm Gym.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 3-4 on the year, took the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-13. New Hampshire had its six-match winning streak snapped while dropping to 6-3 on the campaign.
UD senior Chandler Bryant smashed a season-high 11 kills for Delaware, which hit .243 as a team. Autumn Jenkins added seven kills on the night, while Brooke Robertson and Katie Hillman added six apiece. Julia Anderson dished out 30 assists during the victory, while Ariel Shonk contributed a match-best 19 digs. Shonk now has posted 1,497 digs for her career, and needs just three more to reach the 1,500 digs plateau.
Demi Muses slammed a team-high nine kills for UNH, a 2014 NCAA Tournament participant which is picked to win the America East Conference again this year. Keelin Severtson added 23 assists for the Wildcats, while Tori Forrest made 18 digs.
Bonnie Kenny. “We had good energy and played exceptional defense. I thought this was one of the best matches Julia Anderson has quarterbacked for us. We were just really steady all night.”Delaware never trailed in the opening set, and won seven of nine early points to surge in front 10-5. The Blue Hens led by at least two points the rest of the stanza, eventually putting the set away on an ace by Anderson. After a tight first half of the second set, UNH ran off three consecutive points to take a 19-16 advantage. However UD stormed back to close the frame with a 9-2 spurt, putting the set away on a Bryant kill.
The Blue Hens then jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the third stanza, later took nine of 10 points to increase the cushion to 18-5, and cruised from there.
UD continues play at the tournament on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Boston College and a 4:30 p.m. contest with Michigan State.
Match Notes:
• UD has already faced four teams that participated in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, going 3-1 in those matches
• Bryant's .529 attack percentage is the highest by a Blue Hen this season
• Robertson's six kills are the most of her young career
• Delaware's third set victory was its largest margin since a 25-9 second set win over Penn on Sept. 9, 2014
• UD's 10 attack errors are the fewest since the Blue Hens had nine in a three-set win over William & Mary last Oct. 10
• UD improved to 12-8 all-time vs. UNH, although the former America East rivals hadn't met since 2008
