DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team posted a 3-2 victory over Boston College before falling to Michigan State in three sets on Saturday as the Blue Hens concluded action at the UNH Holly Young Invitational.
UD, which is now 4-5 on the year, took the Boston College match by set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 22-25, 15-10. The Blue Hens then dropped a 25-13, 25-23, 25-10 decision to the Spartans during their final contest of the weekend.
Autumn Jenkins and Alexa Swann each blasted 16 kills against just one attack error against the Eagles, while Chandler Bryant added 14 kills of her own. Swann hit .517 for the match and tied her career-high in kills, while Jenkins added 11 digs to post her third double-double of the year.
Ariel Shonk had a match-high 27 digs as she went over the 1,500 digs mark for her career, while Julia Anderson dished out 46 assists.
Julia Topor slammed 17 kills while Sol Calvete added 16 for Boston College, which dropped to 4-4 on the season.
The decisive fifth set was knotted at 6-6, but Delaware reeled off three consecutive points and led the rest of the way. After the Eagles closed within 13-10, a Brooke Robertson kill and a Boston College attack error put the match away for the Blue Hens.
Robertson led Delaware with a season-high eight kills against Michigan State, which is receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Swann chipped in with six kills while not committing an attack error, while Anderson handed out 23 assists and Shonk added 12 digs.
Michigan State, which improved to 6-3 on the season, got 12 kills each from Brooke Kranda and Allyssah Fitterer. Rachel Minarek and Halle Peterson combined for 49 assists, while Abby Monson made 16 digs.
After the Spartans dominated the first set, the second frame was much tighter, featuring 13 ties and six lead changes. Delaware used a five-point run to surge in front 14-10, and later captured four consecutive points to take a 21-20 margin. However after the set was knotted at 23-23, Michigan State posted two kills to take the set. The Spartans then jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the third set and was not threatened from there.
