NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad moved to 6-0 on the year with a 4-3 victory over Princeton Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who are currently ranked No. 18 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, were once again led by senior Michaela Patzner (at left; Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium), who registered four points on one goal and two assists against the No. 20 Tigers (1-3). Including Friday's win over Temple, Patzner finished the weekend with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Junior Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) put the Hens ahead early, scoring goals in the first and fifth minutes.
The Tigers responded with three unanswered goals and led, 3-2, with 24 minutes remaining in the game.
Patzner then capitalized off a penalty corner in the 49th minute to tie things at 3-3 before assisting sophomore Kayla Devlin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) on the go-ahead goal in the 59th minute, also off a penalty corner.
Delaware was in a nervewracking situation as time expired as Princeton logged three straight penalty corner opportunities. Sophomore Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) stopped Sophia Tornetta's first shot before Tornetta shot one wide and out of bounds to give the Hens the victory.
Oltmans finished the game with four saves while Anya Gersoff collected two saves for the Tigers. Oltmans now has 91 career saves in a Delaware uniform.
“The way we continue to play shows the character of our team. We had a great start, but let them take control of the game in the middle of the first half. We learned and made adjustments, but never stopped believing. It's important to get quality non-conference wins as this will put us in the position we want to be in at the end of the year.”
Junior Meghan Winesett
“We're finally clicking and coming together as a team and that's really making a difference. Princeton is always one of our big games and we knew coming in it was going to be a tough matchup. We did what we needed to do and our defense stayed poised in pressure situations, which is extremely important.”
