Delaware Collects Four Titles on Final Day at SJU

MERION STATION, Pa. – The University of Delaware women's tennis squad finished its season-opening weekend Sunday by capturing four titles on the final day of the Saint Joseph's University Invitational.
In an all-Delaware Flight 1 Doubles final, sophomore Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and freshman Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) (at left) outlasted fellow Blue Hens in sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and freshman Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), 8-6.
Komer and Jaskulski each shined individually by claiming singles consolation awards.
Komer defeated SJU's Sarah Contrata, 6-3, 6-1, before overtaking Bucknell's Melissa Parks, 6-3, 6-1, in the Singles Flight 3 Consolation final.
In the Singles Flight 2 Consolation final, Jaskulski picked up wins over Loyola's Julie Clark, 6-4, 6-2, and Emily Hughes, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Freshman Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) made a splash in her first collegiate weekend by going 4-0 and claiming the Singles Flight 4 Championship. Hall defeated teammate and classmate Draga Sabotic (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), 6-3, 6-3.
“This weekend was a strong start to the season, especially from our freshmen. I'm proud of how everyone competed and it was great to get a few titles under our belts.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· The Blue Hens are 16-8 in singles action to start the season.
· Delaware is 9-3 in doubles play.
· All four doubles pairings had never played competitively prior to this weekend.
