BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team picked up six doubles and singles victories this weekend in competition against UMBC, Richmond and Villanova at the UMBC Invitational.
The Blue Hens opened Friday with two singles wins by freshmen Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) and Draga Sabotic (Okemos, Mich./Okemos). Hall defeated Shannon Cleary, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-1 while Sabotic earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Aishu Iyer.
In Saturday morning's match against the Spiders, the Hens were unable to come up with a victory despite three three-set matches.
Delaware concluded weekend action Saturday afternoon with four wins over the Wildcats.
Junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) paired with freshman Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) for the 6-3, 6-4 decision against Aphra Brokaw and Paulina Baget.
Hall then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win versus Linley Busby in No. 3 singles while LaMachia defeated Alex Krogius, 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth flight.
Sabotic completed play with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-0, 10-6 win over Ellie Zimmerman in the fifth spot.
[On competition vs. UMBC]: “We had some great matches that were all very close. This level of competition so early in the season will help us. I am pleased with the unity, fight and support our team has shown.
[On competition vs. Richmond]: “It's tough losing these close matches, but we are a young team and this is a great opportunity for us to develop quickly. We had a lot of positive things happen, but we need to improve in relaxing under pressure.”
[On competition vs. Villanova]: “This afternoon featured more very close matches. It was nice to see the players embracing the moment, learn from this morning and relax a bit more under the pressure.”
