NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but the University of Delaware men's soccer team fell to Columbia, 1-0, Saturday evening at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The Hens (3-3-1) held things close with the Lions (4-0-0), who are receiving votes nationally, throughout the entire game. UD posted a total of seven shots on the game and had one goal wiped away due to an offsides penalty in the first half.
The two teams remained scoreless for the majority of the game before Dylan Mott put Columbia ahead in the 79th minute. Mott dribbled around two Delaware defenders and then took on Hens freshman goalkeeper Blai Palmí (Moixent, Spain/IES Dr. Lluís Simarro) one-on-one before nailing the ball into the back of the net from short range on the right side.
Senior Ben Sampson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) nearly tied the game just a minute later with a header, but a Lions defender was able to notch the team save for the win.
Palmí finished the game with six saves in 90 minutes played.
Kyle Jackson collected one save for Columbia in the victory.
“Columbia is receiving votes nationally and they deserve it, they're a very good team. I think this game was well contested as it was very even. One good moment for them and one bad moment for us was the separation. It was a much better performance today then it was against Iona so we'll take the positives. A lot of our players are growing as the season goes on. We need to get our legs rested at the moment because it's a quick turnaround until we travel and play at a very good team [Virginia Tech], that like Columbia, has a mix of domestic and international players.”
