BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team continued to have multiple shots and scoring opportunities, but Virginia Tech was too much to handle as the Hokies defeated the Blue Hens, 4-1, Tuesday evening.
Delaware (3-4-1) saw its first and lone goal of the evening in the 10th minute as junior Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) received a cross from classmate Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) at the top of the box to tie the game at 1-1.
VT (4-2-1) picked up the 2-1 lead in the 41st minute off a penalty kick, and game-winning goal, from Merlin Baus. Alessandro Mion tacked on two more goals in the 66th and 75th minutes as the Hokies logged the 4-1 score.
Freshman goalkeeper Blai Palmí (Moixent, Spain/IES Dr. Lluís Simarro) collected two saves in 90 minutes played while Ben Lundgaard accumulated five saves for the Hokies.
“Tonight was the best first half of soccer we have played in some time. With the greatest respect to a worthy opponent, how we didn't have multiple goals will haunt us for some time, as the quality of opportunities was excellent. The sending off late in the first changed everything and full credit to VT for punishing our 10 men with their own solid second half. We look ahead now to a Top 10 team [Elon] coming to Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium for the start of conference play. We are hoping for a repeat of last Saturday's attendance to come and support against another nationally ranked foe.”
