NEWARK, Del. – In what was an extremely balanced and tough-fought game the entire way through, No. 8 Elon was able to come up with the 1-0 victory over Delaware in the Saturday evening at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The defensive battle featured a total of 27 combined shots, including 12 on goal, in the in the Blue Hens (3-5-1) Colonial Athletic Association opener.
The Phoenix (8-1-0, 2-0 CAA) picked up the lone goal of the game in the 18th minute as James Brace collected his third tally of the season.
Redshirt freshman Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) earned his second start of the season and tallied a season-best five saves, including two huge back-to-back saves in the 57th minute.
Juniors Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) and Jaime Martinez (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid) posted three shots apiece for Delaware.
Matthew Jegier saw all 90 minutes between the posts for Elon with six saves.
Ian Hennessy“We're close to being a very great team as right now we're a very good team. Elon is the No. 8 team in the country and I think we were every bit their measure, maybe a tie in the end. They had some great opportunities, as did we. I don't want this team to get down on themselves because we performed well. I think we're at the stage in the season where we really get a good sense of ourselves and we're starting to see better performances. We're just lacking a little bit of quality on both ends of the field for us to come up with 'W's.' I'm optimistic that we'll have another quality game for our great fans Wednesday against Temple at Grant Stadium.”
