NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware will induct its 19th Athletics Hall of Fame Class in a ceremony next Friday, Oct. 2, at the Embassy Suites and follow with a special on-field halftime recognition on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Blue Hens host William & Mary in football at Delaware Stadium.
Today we begin the 10-day countdown to the event and will recognize one of the inductees each day until the ceremony.
STEPHANIE BARRY COURTNEY (Volleyball)
The most decorated student-athlete in Delaware volleyball history, Stephanie became the school's first and only All-American in the sport when she was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in both 2007 and 2008 while playing for head coach Bonnie Kenny.
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Stephanie was a four-year standout defensive specialist, leading the
squad to a combined record of 92-38, three straight Colonial Athletic Association titles, and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008.
A three-year team Most Valuable Player, she earned first team AVCA All-East Region honors in 2007 and 2008, was a three-time first team All-CAA selection, and was named the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year twice. She also was named to the CAA All-Tournament team three times and earned regular season all-tournament honors on seven occasions.
She set school and CAA records with 2,401 career digs and her school record of appearing in 488 straight sets ranked No. 3 in NCAA history upon her graduation.
An outstanding student, she was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball in 2009, was a three-time CAA Academic Honor Roll recipient, earned CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic notice in 2009, and was Delaware's NCAA Woman of the Year nominee as a senior. She earned her degree in finance with minors in economics and management information systems in 2010.
She currently is a senior associate in the finance department of JPMorgan's Corporate and Investment Bank in Binghamton, N.Y. Her husband, Herb Courtney (Delaware '08), was a starting forward for the UD men's basketball team during his career in 2003-08 and is currently an assistant men's basketball coach at Binghamton University.
"Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a great honor and privilege," said Barry. "The success and championships we achieved as a volleyball team was a group effort that would not have been attainable without all of my teammates and the players that laid the foundation before us.
"My family, coaches, and teammates made my time at Delaware such a memorable experience and many of the lessons I learned with them I continue to use today," she said. "The ability to keep driving no matter how far the goal is something I carry with me and I attribute a lot of that drive to my experiences at UD. It was an honor to compete as a Blue Hen and I am forever grateful to be part of the UD Athletics family."
