Delaware Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker To Towson

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team rallied to force a deciding fifth set, but Towson pulled away in the final frame as the Tigers posted a five-set Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Tigers, who improved to 14-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, captured the match by set scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 18-25, 15-9. Delaware dropped its second straight contest while falling to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Katie Hillman posted 15 kills and tied her career-high with 17 digs as she recorded her second consecutive double-double, while Autumn Jenkins also posted a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Chandler Bryant (below) added 11 kills and a season-high eight blocks, while Julia Anderson handed out 41 assists to go with a career-best 15 digs.
Ariel Shonk led all players with 31 digs for the Blue Hens, as she moved into fourth place on the UD career digs list.
Jessica Lewis blasted 26 kills while Haley Pa'akaula contributed 21 kills and 20 digs for the Tigers, who defeated the Blue Hens for the fourth consecutive meeting.
Delaware trailed 17-14 in the first set before reeling off seven consecutive points and eventually taking the set by a three-point margin. After the Tigers responded by taking the second and third sets, the Blue Hens bounced back with a seven-point win in the fourth to force the deciding set.
Neither team led by more than a point early on, while a Hillman kill knotted the set at 8-8. However Towson took control from there, winning seven of the final eight points to capture the match.

• Shonk (right) now has 1,655 career digs, and is 33 shy of third place in UD history
• Hillman has led or tied for the team lead in kills during three consecutive matches
• Hillman and Jenkins combined for 20 kills against just three attack errors
• Jenkins posted her team-leading sixth double-double of the year
• Anderson surpassed the 40-assist mark for the sixth time this season
• Bryant's eight blocks are one shy of her career-high
• UD fell to 3-3 in five-set matches this season
• Towson improved to 8-1 in its last nine matches with UD, and has won three straight at the BCC
