PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Missed shots down the stretch proved to be crucial early Sunday evening as Delaware dropped a 47-43 heartbreaker to Drexel at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Tied at 43 with 3:13 remaining in regulation, the Blue Hens (10-10, 5-4 CAA) missed three field goals and two free throws with two turnovers while the Dragons (11-9, 7-2 CAA) knocked down a jumper and two free throws for the victory.
Add in a first quarter in which the Hens tallied just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the floor and UD was unable to get the tally in the win column.
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) notched her third career double double and ended the night with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
Redshirt sophomore Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) added 11 points and nine rebounds for Delaware.
Sarah Curran registered a game-best 16 points with four rebounds while Rachel Pearson collected 13 points and Jessica Pellechio had 11. Meghan Creighton dished out a game-high six assists for Drexel.
“We played very good defense today and I'm proud of the defensive effort, but we simply didn't make shots. We had multiple chances throughout the game and we didn't finish. There were good post-ups, good jumpers, good layups; we got really good looks, but we didn't make them. We have to be able to hit those high-percentage shots. As frustrating as it is, we will not quit we will keep working. We held a very good team to 47 points on their home court, but we have to get the offense going and finish plays.”
Junior Erika Brown
“We gave them a big lead to start the game and we should never get down by that much. We have to come out hard. If we don't give them that lead, we win the game. We played great defense in the second half, but we had a lot of good opportunities to score and we didn't convert when we needed to. I hate that we lost, but we're not going to back down. We have to keep going hard and get back on the winning track.”
· As always seems to be the case in a typical Delaware-Drexel rivalry matchup, the two teams battled back and forth with 12 lead changes and five ties.
· The Hens have lost three of their last four games.
· Delaware continues to lead the all-time series, 49-28.
· UD's 43 points was the lowest recorded this season. Delaware previously tallied 49 at Hofstra on Jan. 3.
