TOWSON, Md. -- Kory Holden and Anthony Mosley combined for 61 points but the Blue Hens' valiant effort fell just short as the University of Delaware men's basketball team dropped a thrilling 101-97 overtime contest to Towson Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.
Holden scored 33 points and Mosley added a career-high 28, as the guard duo combined to go 26 of 27 from the foul line. Delaware shot 48.1 percent from the field, went 36 of 45 from the foul line, and committed just 10 turnovers but it wasn't enough, as the Blue Hens dropped to 5-16 overall and 0-10 in the CAA. Marvin King-Davis posted his 11th double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds, Devonne Pinkard contributed 10 points, and Maurice Jeffers added eight points and a career-high six blocks.
Towson, which improved to 16-7 overall and 7-3 in league play, put all five starters in double figures while knocking down 14 of 27 three-point attempts and finishing 29 of 42 from the charity stripe. Mike Morsell scored a team-high 24 points for the Tigers, while Arnaud William Adala Moto notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards. John Davis, who entered the game with 13 three-pointers made on the season, finished 5 of 6 from long-range en route to a 21-point day.
The Blue Hens trailed 38-35 at the break and fell behind by as many as seven points three times early in the second period, but rallied back to take their first lead of the afternoon at 66-64 on an acrobatic three-point play by Mosley with 8:20 on the clock. Less than two minutes later Pinkard and Holden drained consecutive three-pointers to put Delaware up 72-66, but Towson eventually pulled back even at 80-80 on a Morsell triple with 1:24 to play.
The Blue Hens went back up 83-81 on a Mosley free throw with 19 seconds on the clock, but Adala Moto hit two foul shots at the other end and Holden missed a tough layup at the buzzer as the teams headed to overtime.
The game was still knotted at 91-91 with 1:40 on the clock following a driving layup by Mosley, but Morsell just beat the shot clock by banking in a three-pointer to put the Tigers in front for good at the 38-second mark. The Blue Hens closed within one three times in the final seconds, but Morsell hit a pair of foul shots with four seconds left to make it a three-point game and the Blue Hens' desperation pass was picked off.
“For our guys to get down 12 and fight back, I couldn't be prouder of their effort,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “They laid it all out on the line, and gave everything they had. Both teams played very well today but credit to Towson, they made one more play than we did. If we keep giving this type of effort, good things will happen for us.”
The Blue Hens scored a season-high 97 points and buried 9 of 14 three-point attempts, while Holden was a perfect 15 of 15 from the foul line and Mosley was 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Delaware returns to action on Thursday with a 7 p.m. game against Elon at Alumni Gym.
