ELON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team scored just 11 first half points and was down 20 at the break as the Blue Hens eventually fell to Elon, 83-56, Thursday night at Alumni Gym.
The Phoenix, who improved to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association, took a 31-11 lead into the half and went up by as many as 38 points as Elon snapped a three-game home losing streak. The Blue Hens, who tied the school record with their 14th consecutive loss, fell to 5-17 overall and 0-11 in league play.
Blue Hen sophomore guard Anthony Mosley scored a game-high 23 points for Delaware, his second consecutive 20-point game, while Devonne Pinkard added a career-high 17 points, all but two after halftime. Barnett Harris led all players with a career-high 12 rebounds, while Pinkard grabbed a season-high nine of his own.
However Kory Holden, coming off a 33-point performance Saturday at Towson, was limited to just one point, while Marvin King-Davis had just two on the night as neither player converted a field goal. Delaware shot just 32.8 percent from the field and handed out only five assists while committing 16 turnovers.
Christian Hairston and Brian Dawkins led Elon with 12 points apiece, while Tanner Samson and Dainan Swoope each contributed 10 on the night.
Delaware opened just 2 of 10 from the field in the early going, falling behind the Phoenix 16-4 eight minutes in following a layup by Sheldon Eberhardt. Later in the half the Blue Hens went scoreless for over five minutes, as the Phoenix scored nine straight to go up 27-9 with 4:55 to play in the stanza.
Pinkard ended the drought with a tough basket inside but Delaware would not score again the rest of the period, as two buckets by Dawkins gave the Phoenix a commanding 31-11 lead at the break.
Delaware went just 5 of 23 from the field in the opening half, hit only one of four free throw attempts, and committed 11 turnovers while not handing out an assist.
Mosley converted layups on consecutive trips early in the second period but Elon answered with a nine-point spurt, going up 42-15 with 16 minutes remaining. The lead grew to as much as 57-19 with 11:33 to play, and the Blue Hens did not cut the lead under 25 the rest of the way.
“What I just watched was a complete embarrassment, and is very troubling,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “Elon played very well and imposed their will on us, and we weren't tough enough to withstand it. We missed our share of layups in the first half, which was a killer for us.”
Delaware has a quick turnaround as the Blue Hens travel to William & Mary on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for a game that will be televised nationally by NBC Sports Network.
Game Notes:
• Delaware established a school record with its 11th straight conference loss
• Elon now leads the all-time series with the Blue Hens, 4-0
• Holden had his eight-game double figure scoring streak snapped
• Pinkard reached double figures for the second consecutive game
• The Blue Hens forced a season-high 20 turnovers
• Elon played 17 players during the contest
