BOSTON, Mass. -- Northeastern raced out to a double digit lead seven minutes into the contest and was never seriously threatened the rest of the way as the Huskies cruised to an 88-56 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Delaware Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern (11-5, 3-0 CAA), which won its third consecutive game, shot 47.7 percent from the field, knocked down 14 three-pointers and assisted on 25 of 31 field goals. Jeremy Miller posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies, while Quincy Ford added 13 points and seven boards.
Kory Holden poured in 14 points, all in the second half, and handed out six assists for the Blue Hens (5-9, 0-3 CAA), while Anthony Mosley contributed 13 points and Cazmon Hayes chipped in 12 to reach double figures for the eighth consecutive game. Delaware struggled from the floor in the opening period for the second straight game, hitting just 27.3 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes.
Northeastern scored the first six points of the game, and following two field goals by the Blue Hens, reeled off 15 consecutive points to jump out to a commanding 21-4 lead at the 9:24 mark of the opening half.
The Huskies went up as many as 19 before the Blue Hens, who started 2 of 18 from the floor, hit four straight field goal attempts and eventually closed within 33-19 on a Hayes three-pointer. Northeastern was still up 15 a minute and a half later and finished the period with an eight-point spurt, taking its largest lead of the stanza at 44-21 when Zach Stahl hit a leaner just before the buzzer.
The Huskies then scored first 12 points of the second half to go up 56-21 with 18:07 to play, before two free throws by Marvin King-Davis put the Blue Hens on the board. Delaware got within 21 points at 69-48 at the seven-minute mark after an eight-point run that featured consecutive three-pointers by Holden, but the Blue Hens would not get closer the rest of the way.
“We can't keep getting off to slow starts and digging ourselves deep holes,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “I thought we got some good looks early, but we just didn't capitalize on them. Our guys kept playing hard, but we weren't nearly good enough tonight. We can't dwell on this and let it affect us with the quick turnaround on Saturday.”
Delaware will open a three-game homestand on Saturday when the Blue Hens host UNCW at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
