NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware fell behind by 16 points midway through the first half and turned the ball over a season-high 20 times Saturday night as the Blue Hens dropped their seventh straight game with an 85-67 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball setback to UNCW at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Despite a spectacular effort from senior forward Marvin King-Davis, who scored a season-high 29
points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field and pulled nine rebounds, the Hens could never recover from the early deficit and fell to 5-10 (0-4 CAA).
The Hens, who are off to an 0-4 start for the first time since 2006-07, also got 15 points and six assists from sophomore guard Anthony Mosley (at left) and 12 points and four assists from sophomore guard Kory Holden.
King-Davis was 13 of 15 from the line and Mosley was perfect on all seven shots from the charity stripe.
UNCW (10-5, 2-2 CAA), which snapped a two-game losing streak, put in a balanced effort with four players reaching double figures led by a career-high 18 points off the bench from Mark Matthews.
Guard Chris Flemmings and Craig Ponder each added 16 points while center C.J. Gettys added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds. Matthews and Ponder each hit 7 of 11 shots from the field with Matthews draining 4 of 5 three-point attempts.
The Seahawks, who snapped a seven-game losing streak to Delaware at The Bob, nailed 7 of 21 three-pointers and shot 53 percent from the field for the game, converting on 35 of 66 shots.
Delaware was hurt by its season-high 20 turnovers, including 13 in the first half. The Hens shot just 39.1 percent from the field (18 of 46) and managed just one three-pointer on eight tries. Delaware outscored UNCW 30-8 at the foul line but it hardly mattered. The 30 free throws was a season-high for the Hens.
“I told the team that we are in a serious funk, and we have to fight our way out of this,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We had a 13-minute stretch when we played good basketball offensively and defensively, but we just couldn't buy a bucket after that. We're getting good shots, but just haven't been able to knock them down lately. We've just got to stick together, keep working and keep fighting, and we will."
After the Hens scored the game's first basket, UNCW went on a 21-3 run that gave the Seahawks a 21-5 advantage with 10:17 left in the opening half. UNCW led by as many as 19 points in the first half before Delaware cut the margin to 41-30 at the break.
The second half started out good for the Hens but quickly soured. Delaware cut the lead to five at 43-38 on a layup by King-Davis three minutes in, but UNCW responded with an 18-1 run over the next 4:38 to go up 61-39 with 12:14 left. Delaware never got closer than the final score with UNCW going up as many as 25 at one point.
